Sweet & Sour Fish (Tofu)

If you have a few pantry items like ketchup, rice vinegar and brown sugar, you can make this delicious asian dish in no time. I got this recipe from my thai cooking class many years ago….(but I think it’s chinese…?!?) I like this dish with Tofu but my husband gets hungry again in half an hour after he eats tofu, so I made fish version here. (Used Tilapia. I buy  from Costco and freeze them. It always comes in handy when I have a ‘Gosh I have no grocery to cook tonight.’ moment.)   Ingredients 1 firm Tofu (or [...]

Rainbow trout baked in banana leaf

Ingredients Fish of your choice (I like to use ‘thin’ white fish like trout or tilapia. I used rainbow trout for this recipe) Vegetables of your choice (I used sliced red pepper, snow peas and shiitake mushrooms but you can use shredded carrots, cabbages, bok choy, bean sprouts…any veggies you would like! But make sure you add shiitake mushrooms – I think they add ‘that’ flavor in this specific dish!! ) Banana leaf (washed and trimmed) Flavoring : grated garlic, ginger, sesame oil, soy sauce, fish sauce, fresh lime juice Garnish : chopped green onion. Sorry I do not have [...]

30-seconds Peanut Sauce

My older sister just had a baby, so being the good sister that I am , I drove 5.5 hours to her house to help her out. Well..now I have a new respect for all the mothers out there….man, taking care of a new born baby is not a joke. Babies cry a LOT! My sister barely has a moment to take a shower, clean or cook. I thought I had a hard time house-training my puppies. You literally have to give them non-stop 24 hours attention and of course, she has to feed him every 2 hours…my poor sister…full [...]

Aparna’s indian spicy green curry with Onion chutney

I love ethnic dance, food and culture. And I was lucky enough to make friends with an incredible woman, ‘Aparna‘ at my dance studio. She is a private chef, cooking instructor and Ayurvedic lifestyle coach – Of course, I showed up in her next cooking class. I’ve never been to India ( the only indian dish I know is from the restaurants ) so I was super excited to see what homemade ‘real’ indian food is like. And I made what I learned at home!!! Now I can proudly say I cooked ‘real’ indian food. This curry is not thick [...]

Potato-Leek pancakes

I’m back!!!! Yes, I am still alive and well. We just went through some kitchen cabinet work so our kitchen was all torn apart. At some point, I did not even have an access to the refrigerator….but it’s all done and it feels good to be back. Hope some of you missed me. With the kitchen all torn apart, the only food I could make was simple and fast dishes like potato-leek pancakes. We were invited to a dinner party a few weeks ago and I made these on a tiny corner of the kitchen counter while our worker Santos measured [...]

Sake & Food Pairing

Besides wine, Sake is my favorite drink (adult beverage, I meant).  So when SakeOne (One of very few American sake makers. I think there are only 4…) contacted me, I was thrilled. They were going to send me a box of their premuim sake. Heck yeah! I will trade in food for sake anytime!!!  My gosh, I was pleasantly surprised by it’s taste. So pure and clean! (If you see the term “Ginjo” anywhere on the label, it means ‘Premium’ where at least the outer 40% of the rice gets milled away – protein/fat is removed for it’s best aromatic flavor. [...]

Celebrating New Year : Homie style

In Korea where I grew up, one of the biggest celebration is New Year’s day. Solnal is the first day of the first month of the new year and we make this  steaming hot, nourishing bowl of ‘Ddukgookk’ (rice dumpling soup. Eating the bowl of New Year soup on New Year’s Day means becoming one year older. Ouch. Cheers to the year of Dragon!

Chicken pho

Temperature dropped, I can feel a crisp chill in the air…my Uggs came out so did my appetite for Pho. When we go to vietnamese restaurant, I usually get beef pho with you know, ‘other stuff’ in it. (Tendon, strip, brisket, meatball, eyeball (just kidding)….) but I didn’t want to freak out my husband so I made chicken pho. As much as I love pho in a restaurant, I find them a little too salty for me. It tastes so good at that moment (I love broth..so I go way down of the bottom of a bowl) but afterwards, I [...]

Thai glass noodle with shrimps

I have an asian stomach. So I need to eat noodle and rice everyday otherwise my stomach goes on a strike. Now my husband who is a white boy from Kansas would rather have asian food than what I call ‘white boy food’. This is by far my favorite dish of all time. I always make double batch cause it tastes even better as a leftover next day.   Ingredients 1 pack Glass noodle (Vermuchili noodle) 1 pack black fungus mushroom 1 pack jumbo shrimp (of course you can use fresh ones but I get mine at trader’s joe. Pretty [...]
